Multidisciplinary artist Laura Kavanaugh’s “Le regard” is inspired by a series of colourful, flowing abstract images. These images, created by the artist, were cut from paintings made on three huge panels of cotton paper. They were then photographed, juxtaposed, and printed on a “digital canvas” in a style falling somewhere between manga and graphic novel. A single image was distributed to each member of the ensemble, and, in order to maintain an element of surprise, the composer stipulated that each performer should play a different image (chosen at random) for each rehearsal and for the concert. The floral hues, flamboyant flashes, textures, details, and varied shapes of these images created a multiform field in which the music developed. The interactions between the performers and each person’s sensibilities evolved throughout this process of creative fulfillment. There was no conductor, no stopwatch, and the instructions for the duration were that the group should find a natural end after approximately 15 minutes.

«Le regard» de l’artiste multidisciplinaire Laura Kavanaugh est inspiré d’une série d’images abstraites, jaillissantes et très colorées. Ces images de l’artiste ont été découpées à partir de peintures faites sur trois immenses panneaux de papier coton; les images ont ensuite été photographiées, juxtaposées et imprimées sur une «toile numérique» dans un style se situant entre le manga et le roman graphique. Une seule image était distribuée à chaque instrumentiste et lors des répétitions ainsi qu’au concert, chacun·e jouait une image différente (selon le souhait de la compositrice) et ce, afin de maintenir un effet de changement et de surprise. Les couleurs florales, les éclats flamboyants, les textures, les détails et les formes variées de ces images ont créé ce champ multiforme dans lequel la musique s’est développée. Les interactions entre les interprètes et les sensibilités de chacun·e ont évolué tout au long de ce processus d’accomplissement créateur. Il n’y avait pas de chef, ni de chronomètre et la consigne quant à la durée était que le groupe devait trouver une fin naturelle après approximativement 15 minutes.
