Elizabeth Millar, “something moving something still” (2022)

“something moving something still”, by clarinetist and composer Elizabeth Millar, consists of a video score divided into three movements with verbal instructions. The video features images and photographs from two of the composer’s favourite places: the area where she grew up in Perth, Western Australia, and the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough where she lived in Montréal. This composition invites the musicians to respond to the two main themes presented: movement and immobility. The piece also calls on the performers to pay attention to the rhythms and routines of our movements in the spaces around us and in everyday places. Stability and activity are superimposed and intertwined throughout the three movements, with images of clouds, fences, and staircases, parks where joggers pass or children play, and wide boulevards where cars zip by. The video is also divided into several screens that come to life, overlap, or disappear, providing cues for the performers to intervene and form subgroups within the ensemble.

«something moving something still», de la clarinettiste et compositrice Elizabeth Millar, consiste en une partition vidéo divisée en trois mouvements et en consignes verbales. La vidéo est constituée d’images et de photographes provenant de deux lieux affectionnés par la compositrice: le quartier où elle a grandi à Perth en Australie Occidentale et le quartier Notre-Dame-de-Grâce où elle a vécu à Montréal. Cette composition invite les instrumentistes à répondre aux deux grands axes qui y sont proposés: le mouvement et l’immobilité. La pièce demande aussi aux interprètes de porter attention aux rythmes et aux routines de nos déplacements dans les espaces qui nous entourent et dans des lieux quotidiens. Stabilité et activité se superposent et s’enlacent tout au long des trois mouvements où cohabitent des images de nuages, de clôtures, d’escaliers, de parcs où défilent sportifs ou enfants qui s’amusent, de grands boulevards où des voitures filent et défilent. La vidéo est également divisée en plusieurs écrans qui s’animent, se juxtaposent ou disparaissent et qui sont autant d’indications fournies aux interprètes quant à leurs interventions et la formation de sous-groupes à l’intérieur de l’ensemble.
