Jean Derome / Jean Derome, “Tessons” (2022)

My father was a potter, so I knew from an early age what tessons (“shards”) meant. To live surrounded by pottery is to risk loving fleeting things. It’s about making friends while remembering that they’re fragile and can break at any moment. It means keeping in mind that it’s better to live surrounded by works of art than to keep them under lock and key. When Joane Hétu asked me for the title of the piece I was composing for the “Démantibulé·es” concert, the word came to me spontaneously. My piece, “Tessons”, blends three contrasting materials: Le Fil represents the stubborn root-like growth of life, which will always begin anew, with or without us. Le Texte represents the passage of time: a long list of words linked to “shards,” words that fall relentlessly like the drops in Chinese water torture. Les Éclats reminds me of a big pile of dishes breaking like the laughter of death.

Comme mon père était potier, j’ai su très tôt ce que «tessons» voulait dire. Vivre entouré de poteries, c’est risquer l’amour de choses fugitives. C’est s’apprivoiser à de fidèles amis tout en n’oubliant pas qu’ils sont fragiles et peuvent se casser à tout moment. C’est garder en tête qu’il vaut mieux vivre entouré d’oeuvres d’art que de les mettre sous clé. Quand Joane Hétu m’a demandé le titre de la pièce que j’étais en train de composer pour le concert «Démantibulé·es», le mot m’est revenu spontanément. Ma pièce «Tessons» mêle trois matières contrastées: Le Fil représente la vie qui pousse obstinément comme une racine; cette vie qui recommencera toujours, avec ou sans nous. Le Texte représente le temps qui passe: une longue énumération de mots reliés à «tessons», mots qui tombent inexorablement comme le supplice de la goutte d’eau. Les Éclats me font penser à une grosse pile de vaisselle qui éclate comme le rire de la mort.
